Ice Hotels

Rebuilt from water every winter, gone again by spring.

Ice hotels are seasonal architecture — built from snow and water in early winter, occupied for a few months, then returned to the ground. The category is small worldwide, and one entry is listed here.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

Saariselka, Finland

Kakslauttanen lies well above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, and it is best understood as a resort with a seasonal ice component rather than a single frozen building. Snow and ice structures are built each winter and allowed to melt when the season turns.

The glass igloos are what the place is known for: domed rooms with transparent roofs, heated and glazed so that the aurora can be watched from a bed. Alongside them sit log kelo cabins for guests who want thick walls and a fireplace, and traditional snow igloos for those who want the opposite.

The surrounding programme is Lapland's standard winter repertoire — husky and reindeer teams, snowshoe routes, a smoke sauna. Summer here is a different property entirely, green and light through the night.
